Children and Obesity

obese baby walkingMy 3-year-old son Raf started watching TV as early as 1 year old. He tends to prefer eating chocolates and junk foods over fruits. On the other hand, my 1-year–old daughter Drey, is very fond of eating apples and bananas. Unlike her brother, she is not the kind to sit still watching TV for a long period of time. Each child is unique so I can never really compare one from the other. Although this is normal to kids choosing candies and junkies over fruits, my hubby and I made sure that when they open the refrigerator they get to see fruits and vegetables. During mealtime, it’s important for me that they get to eat healthy foods. So I really cook for our meals to ensure they get the right amount of nutrients every meal. Discipline is very important in rearing children. One common problem parents encounter everyday is food choice.

Sad to say, there are children out there as early as 2 years–old who are diagnosed by their pediatrician as overweight and even obese! Just a while ago, while I was buying something for the kids on my way home, I saw a 2-year-old boy who has difficulty walking due to being obese. His body was big for his age that he is already limping when he walks. I wonder what his parents were thinking? Would they be thinking that they are great parents for letting their baby grow hugely? I pity that child. Sooner or later, he will suffer illnesses like diabetes or heart ailment.

Some get the news from their pediatrician that their 11-year-old son has Type 2 diabetes or their 16-year-old daughter has osteoporosis. This is due to the “out-of-control” lifestyles fashioned by the adults of the past 40 years. This has led to a 50% increase in the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes–the kind of diabetes that used to be known as “adult onset” because this obesity-related disorder wasn’t usually diagnosed until age 50 or older!

It is important that we educate our kids what kind of foods are healthy for them. When they know that we are giving them food that provides nourishment to their body, not just feed them for the sake of feeding them.

As parents, make wellness a family priority. Be a good example by showing them you are eating the right food and do exercise. At home, I let my family drink Herbalife soy based Formula 1 shake. My kids loves it so much especially the chocolate flavor blended with fruits.
